We are now down to just the final accents!

Today we spent less than 2 hours finishing up by painting in the final accents, touching up and removing all the masking.

RUSSELL RICKS IN FRONT OF MC PRINT MURAL

MAY 4, 2011. Rajish, who is originally from India an employee of the company, photographed me in front of the MC Print Mural.

LEFT END, SECOND SECTION.

While working on this project, I faced right into this iron pillar many times. The problem is, I get to concentrating on what I am doing that I loose touch with what might be going on around me and it is in those moments keep smashing my face into the pillar

MOOSE, LEFT END

Once we removed the masking, i was very pleased with the end result.

This section has become my favorite part of the mural.

ROBERTS BENCH SECTION

With warmer highlights on the sunlit side of Roberts Bench and a few tweaks here and there, The employees were very pleased with the end result. They like it and that's what counts!

MOOSE AND RESERVOIR SECTION

It only took a few minor accents and less than 2 hours to finish up the project.

I love the shape of the mountains viewed in American Fork Canyon.

Aspens Right Side

I ran smack-dab and face-first into that iron beam support yesterday. Ouch, that hurt!

Mount Baldy Section

The aspen trees now have more form and are no longer flat and dull looking. Mount Baldy got a little more form and refined patches of snow, giving the granite form more of a 3D look.

Right End Section

Looks much better without the masking.

This is the first section everyone sees when they walk in.

Hike to Stewarts Falls

Took a fun hike to a great reward on the 4th of July. Stewarts Falls is in the Timpanogos Range Region.

Changed Projects For A Few Weeks

February 14th. We are now working on the Novatek Mountain Vista Mural. We will be there for a few weeks. We will be back to this mural to finish it around the end of February or first of March. Check out the progress on the other mural at; http://www.novatekmountainvistamural.blogspot.com

Changing The Warm Sky To A Cool Sky

As the client requested, the sky is now a cool blue tone.

The length of the mural is almost 73 feet.

Today I repainted the sky area and added snow to the mountains. It's really taking shape!

CREATING A WATER REFLECTION

I made the foreground more interesting by broadening the lake area, adding green aspens amidst the gold and red colors and redesigning the rock area..

In this area where I grouped a mass of boulders, there will be a small waterfall cascading over the rocks.

Moose By The Lake

Bull moose from a Carl Rungus Painting. We plan to paint moose feeding in the lake and grazing among the aspen trees in the left picture plane area. We may also add some elk or mule deer somewhere.

Painting in the foothills

The foothills make a nice contrasting backdrop for the autumn colored trees in the foreground.

I think a little morning mist would look good lingering at the bottom of the foothills and behind the line of distant lakeshore trees.

Today we added form to the Silver Creek area.

Changing A Mountain Form

A geologist stopped in yesterday and gave me some advice on improving some of the mountain forms to the east of Timpanogos.

This is a better picture of the main mountain. We plan to tweek the snow area a bit more.

This shows the tree and mountain area just to the right of Timp. The other day, I turned to back up a little, but ran smack dab into this post. The post also got painted by my brush!

Today we added a few more aspen trunks and created more depth to the area by increasing the range of values from darker to lighter.

Grasses In The Front And More Work on the Tree Line Behind The Lake

W started breaking up the tree line behind the lake to add more variation.

Swan

We Added A coule of Swans.

More Moose Added

We blocked in a cow moose behind the bull and another bull behind the moose out fron and to the left. This moose stands further back to help create proportion and depth to the mural.

From here, there is still another 15-20 feet of mural to the left. Somehow, I lost a couple of jepegs in my camera. I will get the pictures tomorrow.

Mount Baldy Section

Mount Baldy is at the top of the trail end where you'll fine a beautiful lake back dropped by this granite monument. SOmetimes you can spot moose or Rocky Mountain Goat.

The challenge of this panoramic scene is to keep it consistent without getting monotonous or too much the same. At the same time, we want to create unity and an organic naturalistic feel that has natural variation.

About Me

Russell Ricks: Artist Russell Ricks is a second generation artist from the Don Ricks family. Raised in Rexburg, Idaho, Russell grew up in an environment surrounded by creativity every day. It all began as a young child watching his father Don Ricks painting as a hobby while he provided for the young family running a sign business. By about 1969, when Russell was 9 years old, his father founded a national outdoor plein air painting school called, Painting Vacations. Two nationally renown instructors; Sergei Bongart, a Russian native; and Milford Zornes, a water colorist from Southern Utah, taught in the school along with Russell's father. The school ran for about 15 years, giving a solid art instructional foundation to artist Russell Ricks. Currently, Mr. Ricks is represented in Montgomery-Lee Fine Art in Park City, Utah.
